Day two of Miss Walker´s voice loss... :(

Hello Year 8,

This lesson we are going to look at how to write a letter, with a focus on the differences between formal and informal letters. Here is an example on an informal letter:

TASK 1: Copy this template into your notebooks, then make your own template for a formal letter.

TASK 2: In pairs, imagine you have broken the law and are at risk of being sent to a YOI. Write a letter to your friend explaining:
- What you have done
- How you´re feeling and why (nervous, scared)
- What you think of the YOI

Remember to include the grammar we have looked at together and the vocabulary we learnt when we read the text.
-Conditionals (1st and 2nd)
-Interesting, varied connectives
-Present (simple and continuous) and past tenses. (and future tense too?)
-Informal language

TASK 3: Now highlight the informal phrases in your letter and rewrite your letter using only formal language.

Hi Year 8,

You need to focus your revision on the vocabulary we learnt last week (but don´t spend all lesson on quizlet), connectives, conditionals, and writing formally/informally.

Informal writing is the type of language you use when you are speaking to your friends, where as formal language you might use when writing a letter to your head teacher for example. Here is a list of formal language, I would like you to copy up the table and see if you can come up with an informal alternative for each word.

Using some of the informal words and phrases from your table, imagine that you have been sent to a young offenders´institution and complete the above sentence openers, describing your feelings about this.
